Three December Grads Shaped by One Extraordinary Family

Three grads, three journeys — all fueled by the Hummel Family Scholarship

We recently caught up with Hummel Scholar Jake Owens to follow up on his journey as he prepares to graduate in December. On a conference call during a quick break in his busy student-teaching schedule, his energy was radiating through the screen. Effervescent and full of enthusiasm, Owens radiates a passion for teaching and giving back — a passion he attributes to two things: the safe space he found in school as a young student and the generosity of the Hummel family and their scholarship support.

Owens' goal of wanting to become a teacher and make a difference was shaped early in life. Growing up in Aurora, he faced significant challenges, including losing his mother at a young age. During this difficult time of loss and healing, school became an important place where he could find stability, support and community.

“I had teachers who made a huge difference in my life, and I realized ٳ󲹳’s what I wanted to do for others,” Owens said. “School gave me a sense of purpose and showed me how one person’s guidance can truly change a life.”

His interest in special education took root in high school, where he joined a unified soccer program bringing together students with and without disabilities. That experience, combined with his personal journey, motivated him to pursue a career helping others find their own safe spaces and opportunities to succeed.

As a Hummel Scholar, Owens not only had access to quality education but also a powerful example of generosity and paying it forward. Built on a “pay it forward” promise dating back to a small financial gift that helped Bob Hummel afford college, the Hummel Family Scholarship now annually supports 58 students like Owens with a minimum annual award of $8,000 as they pursue degrees in high-impact fields like education, nursing and business.

“The Hummel Family Scholarship completely shaped who I am,” Owens said. “I wouldn’t be in this position without it. ’s inspired me to keep that legacy going and pay it forward — ٳ󲹳’s what I want to do in my career and my life.”

He credits the Hummel family for instilling in him a sense of responsibility to give back.

“They’ve made such an impact in my life that everything I do, I want to do because I’ve been given this opportunity,” Owens said. “I try to show my gratitude through my actions — by coaching, teaching and building relationships with my students.”

Owens recently completed his student teaching in Aurora and plans to continue teaching after graduation. Reflecting on his journey, he’s proud of how far he’s come and how the generosity of the Hummel family has shaped his path.

“Giving back DZ’t have to be about money,” Owens said. “’s about sharing your time, your kindness, your experience. ճ󲹳’s the ultimate gift.”
